Faculty History

After the Second World War, two young students from Malaya selected and awarded scholarships for veterinary studies in the United Kingdom. In the 1950s and 1960s many more are selected for studies, not only in the UK but also in Australia, Canada and New Zealand under the scholarship Federal, State and the Colombo Plan.

Those who return to join the DVS is about 2-3 per year. It became obvious in the 1960s, their number was reduced to cater especially when the transfer of full responsibility for animal husbandry in 1962.

In addition, the Department of Veterinary Services has submitted a memorandum to the Higher Education Planning Committee about the need for veterinary education in Malaya.

The need for a veterinary school in Malaya discussed at the FAO Conference on Haemorrhagic Septicemia held in Kuala Lumpur in 1962 and a proposal was discussed at the Second Meeting of the FAO / WHO Expert Panel on Veterinary Education in Rome in 1963.

The subject was again discussed publicly in 1968 at the first annual conference of the Association of Veterinary Surgeons Malaysia-Singapore.

Prime Minister of the time, YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, in his opening speech at the conference, promised to examine the question of the establishment of the veterinary faculty if the proposal is submitted. Therefore, a sub-committee veterinary school was founded by the Association to address this matter.

Finally a working paper submitted to the Higher Education Planning Committee which recommended the establishment of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Malaya. However, no action was taken.

In 1967, the Department of Veterinary Services has published a report entitled Recommendations for the Industrial Development of Livestock and Veterinary Services Recast.

The following year, a faculty of veterinary, Sir William Weipers, of Glasgow University Veterinary School has been invited to Malaysia by the Department of Veterinary Services and the Association of Veterinary Surgeons Malaysia-Singapore to present a paper on veterinary education: A study of the needs of Malaysia and Singapore in the first annual conference of the Association in Singapore in August 1968.
