Objective :
At the end of the course, the student would :
  • understand abnormal reproduction in male and female domestic animals
  • gain experience in artificial insemination, pregnancy diagnosis, obstetrics procedures fertility control in domestic animals
  • become aware of the importance of effective reproduction for economic animal production
Synopsis :
A course dealing with obstetrics, abnormal reproduction and artificial insemination in domestic animals.  Laboratories are devoted to acquisition of skills in pregnancy diagnosis, obstetrical procedures, clinical examination of the male and female reproductive systems and therapeutic techniques and technology for improving reproductive efficiency and productivity of domestic animals.

Parturition: Approaching signs; stages and events related to the birth process

Principles of obstetrics: Description of foetus in relation to dam (presentation, position & posture); approach to an obstetrical case.

Dystocia.

Retained placenta.

Postpartum and involution of uterus. Postpartum ovarian function. Causes of delayed resumption of normal oestrous cycle.

Bovine fertility, infertility and sterility. Fertility measures.

Swine infertility: Reproductive failure in pigs.

Abortion: differential diagnoses. Brucellosis and Campylobacteriosis

Laboratory materials for diagnosis of abortion. Diseases affecting urogenital system in ruminants (Malaysia).

Frozen semen, preservation and maintenance in storage. Clinical application of hormones in animal reproduction.
