Objective :

At the end of the course, the student would :

  • understand the diseases in avian and emphasis on important diseases in Malaysia

  • acquire knowledge in diagnosis, treatment and control of avian diseases

  • be able to relate disease control with economics of avian production

Synopsis :

This course deals with the diseases of poultry, ducks and caged birds with emphasis on the important poultry diseases in Malaysia.  Diseases are presented, where possible, according to the clinical syndromes under which they commonly occur.  Methods of mass diagnosis and control are stressed due to the intensive nature of poultry industry in Malaysia

Introduction to Avian Medicine.  Poultry diseases in relation to the structure of poultry farming in Malaysia.  Major diseases of poultry in Malaysia.

Avian Immune System  : Vaccine and vaccination programmes

Avian Immune System  : Principles of disease investigations

Avian Immune System  : Flock health programmes.

Causes of Mortality in Young Chicks :  Omphalitis, yolk sac infection, aspergillosis, pullorum, avian encephalomyelitis, Newcastle disease, fatty liver-kidney syndrome, visceral gout.  Other causes.  chilling, overheating, starvation, trauma.

Diseases with Respiratory Signs :  Newcastle disease, avian influenza.

Diseases with Respiratory Signs :  Infectious bronchitis, infectious laryngotracheitis, fowl pox.

Diseases with Respiratory Signs :  Aspergillosis, infectious coryza, colibacillosis.
Syngamus trachea infection, NH3, gas.

Diseases with Nervous Signs  :  Avian encephalomyelitis, avian encephalo-malacia, vitamin A deficiency,

Diseases with Nervous Signs  :  Newcastle disease, Marek’s disease, aspergillosis. aflatoxicosis, botulism

Diseases with Nervous Signs  : Pathology and lab. diagnosis of nervous disorders in avian.

Enteric Diseases  :  Coccidiosis, Helminthiasis, Salmonellosis

Enteric Diseases  :  Necrotic enteritis, ulcerative enteritis, yersiniosis, rotavirus infection, infectious bursal disease.

Septicaemic Diseases  :  Pasteurellosis, colisepticaemia, staphylococcal and streptococcal infection, erysipelas.

Diseases Associated with Leg Weakness  : Ricketts, osteomalacia, tibial dyschondroplasia, perosis, twisted leg syndrome, spondylolisthesis, arthritis, osteomyelitis, synovitis, viral tenosynovitis

Diseases Associated with Leg Weakness  :  Cage layer fatigue, curled toe paralysis, turkey syndrome ‘65, articular gout, muscular dystrophy, scoliosis, etc

Sudden Death : Fatty liver and kidney syndrome, fatty liver haemorrhagic syndrome, leucocytozoonosis, sudden death syndrome

Sudden Death :  Visceral gout, inclusion body hepatitis, avian monocytosis, marble spleen disease of pheasants.

Skin Diseases  :   Fowl pox, external parasites (mites, lice, fleas), gangrenous dermatitis, staphylococcal dermatitis, favus, pantothenic acid deficiency.

Diseases that Cause DropiIn Egg Production  :  Egg drop syndrome, infectious bronchitis, infectious coryza.Use of egg production records as an aid in disease investigations.

Neoplastic Diseases : Marek’s disease, lymphoid leukosis, reticulo-endotheliosis osteopetrosis.

Toxicities, Poisoning and Miscellaneous Diseases  :  Aflatoxicosis, botulism, toxic fat syndrome, sulpha drug poisoning

Toxicities, Poisoning and Miscellaneous Diseases  :  Stunting and runting syndrome, prolapsed oviduct, egg bound, internal laying, histomoniasis, pendulous crop, spiking – mortality syndrome.

Diseases of Ducks and Caged Birds  :  Duck viral enteritis, duck viral hepatitis, pasteurellosis, colibacillosis, aspergillosis, aflatoxicosis.

Introduction to cage and wild bird medicine.  Handling of birds for treatment.

Common infectious and non-infectious diseases of caged birds

Attendance :

An attendance of a minimum of 80% of the lectures and practical is required for eligibility to sit for the final semester examination
